Hany Abdelzaher

Tenor Hany Abdelzaher was born in Cairo, where he completed his bachelor’s degree at the Cairo Conservatory. He continued his education at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, graduating with a master’s degree in opera and music theatre. He was a member of the ensemble at the Cairo Opera House for ten years. During his studies in Salzburg, he performed as Nerone in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, Don José in Bizet’s Carmen, the Male Chorus in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, and Rinuccio in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi. In 2016, he sang the role of Radamès in Verdi’s Aida with the Salzburg Philharmonic. At the Theater Akzent in Vienna, Hany appeared in the title role of Mozart’s Idomeneo. Additionally, he performed as Vaudémont in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta and Don José in Bizet’s Carmen at the Operosa Opera Festival in Serbia and Montenegro. With the Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic, Abdelzaher took on the lead role of Tito in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito.

He made a guest appearance at the Staatstheater Bielefeld as Radamès in Aida, and in 2020 he was the cover for Don Carlo at the Salzburg Easter Festival in a new production of Don Carlo under the musical direction of Christian Thielemann. In 2021, he performed as Turiddu in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana at the Teatro Luigi Mancinelli in Orvieto, Italy, and made his debut in 2022 at the Theater Bremen in the title role of Don Carlo.

In addition to his performances in opera houses and festivals, Hany Abdelzaher has successfully participated in opera competitions: in 2017, he was a finalist in the International Opera Competition “Beniamino Gigli” in Rome, and in 2021, he won first place at the International Opera Competition “Spazio Musica” in Orvieto, Italy.

As of the 2022/23 season, Hany Abdelzaher is a member of the ensemble at Theater Regensburg. During the 2022/23 season, Hany sang the role of Titorelli in Gottfried von Einem’s opera Der Prozess, Macduff in Verdi’s Macbeth, and the title role in Leonard Bernstein’s Candide.

In the 2023/24 season, Hany will perform the role of Bacchus in Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, the Prince in Antonín Dvořák’s Rusalka, and the Circus Director in the German premiere of Valuska by Peter Eötvös.

In the 2024/25 season, Hany will sing the roles of the Sailor and a Shepherd in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Macduff in Verdi’s Macbeth, and B.F. Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.
